"American Stories"
“One can travel the world and see nothing. To achieve understanding it is necessary not to see many things, but to look hard at what you do see.” Giorgio Morandi
According to Ms. Harley, “Painting people has always intrigued me, because etched in their faces and embodied in their gestures are glimpses of their stories...where they have been and, with the young, what may be yet to come.”
The Portfolios
- "Patterns of Life” highlights the patterns we live with in our daily life.
- "Between the Lines” explores what may go unnoticed.
- "Together, We...Concerned by the vehemence of the political and social rhetoric of the past several years, I am creating, primarily in watercolor and pencil, portraits of men and women I meet every day. Given the simplicity of the medium and without context to distract, the viewer must contemplate the character of the individual portrayed…to recognize that, while we are alone, we are profoundly connected to each other by experience and empathy. In this way, one by one, we will look beyond the labels and begin to see that Together we…. Can be better. Each piece is part of an ongoing work, which currently numbers over 100. Each can be sold separately or in groups as chosen by the viewer.
- “And a Good Time It Was” highlights the joys of summer, past and present, when time glistened.
- “Not Just a Pretty Face” looks at women in the past who have taken chances and done the unexpected.
- “State of Grace” reflects on women and men as they age, revering their propriety, resilience, communion and sometimes their loneliness.
- “Reflections in Color"... often color is the only way to express the memories for which there are no words
- “A Pocket of Time” captures low country South in the 19th to early 20th century.
- "Exposure --- the Southern Series" examines the inner workings of the pre-war South -- the grand homes and those who kept them going.
